Rural Construction Studio
Anji, China | 2021-2023
Anji’s Bamboo forest is one of the largest natural bamboo forests in the world and became famous as the site where Academy-Award-winning film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” was filmed. “Rural Construction Studio” will be a permanent bamboo architecture structure of a 180sqm and will comprise spaces for researching and teaching on the use of bamboo in architecture. The project consists of an enclosed space covered by a bending-active bamboo grid shell which will be made from a hybrid construction concept: a flat, prefabricated equidistant bamboo grid will be popped-up into shape and locked into its final geometry by diagonals that will be laid up and fixed afterwards one at a time.
